The 17th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was almost as varied as modern America. About the Author
Professor Mariusz Mielczarek of Torun University, Poland, is an archaeologist and numismatist who has taken part in many digs, and over the past few years has conducted expeditions to the northern Black Sea coast of the Ukraine. His previous publications include 'Cataphracti and Clibanaril: Studies on the Heavy Armoured Cavalry of the Ancient World' (Lodz, 1993). Richard Brzezinski is a young historian and a leading expert on the military history of central and Eastern Europe, greatly admired for his primary research and painstaking work in archives in Sweden, Germany and Poland. He has previously written titles on Polish Armies 1569-1696 and the army of Gustavus Adolphus in Men-at Arms series.

In these four artfully crafted essays, Patrick Geary explores the way ancient and medieval authors wrote about women. Geary describes the often marginal role women played in origin legends from antiquity until the twelfth century. Not confining himself to one religious tradition or region, he probes the tensions between women in biblical, classical, and medieval myths (such as Eve, Mary, Amazons, princesses, and countesses), and actual women in ancient and medieval societies. Using these legends as a lens through which to study patriarchal societies, Geary chooses moments and texts that illustrate how ancient authors (all of whom were male) confronted the place of women in their society. Unlike other books on the subject, Women at the Beginning attempts to understand not only the place of women in these legends, but also the ideologies of the men who wrote about them. The book concludes that the authors of these stories were themselves struggling with ambivalence about women in their own worlds and that this struggle manifested itself in their writings.

„Encyklopedia Broni", którą oddajemy w Państwa ręce, ukazuje szereg przedmiotów i urządzeń służących człowiekowi jako broń. W jednym tomie znalazło się reprezentatywne przedstawienie większości znanych typów broni pochodzących z różnych okresów i kręgów kulturowych. Za podstawę podziału przyjęto kryterium funkcji. Całość problematyki pogrupowano według tej właśnie zasady, jednocześnie wyjaśniając teoretyczne podstawy działania danego rodzaju broni i w wielu wypadkach wzbogacono je ilustracjami. Przyjęto ogólne założenie, by poszczególne grupy (odpowiadające rozdziałom) uporządkować wg narastającego skomplikowania — od najprostszych przedmiotów aż po złożone systemy współczesnego uzbrojenia. Rozdział pierwszy zaczyna się od pałek i maczug, a rozdział ósmy kończy się na współczesnych systemach broni okrętowych.

Die Geschichte der Hubschrauber begann 1904, als der russische Wissenschaftler Pro­fessor Schukowski eine Studie unter dem Titel "Anhebung von Nutzlasten durch Drehflügler" veröffentlichte. Dies hatte zur Folge, daß vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg die Hub­schrauberentwicklung ausschließlich auf Ruß­land beschränkt blieb. Sie war dabei vor allem mit den Namen Jurjew und Sikorski verknüpft.
In Deutschland konstruierte 1913/14 Baum-gärtel einen Haubschrauber mit co-axialen gegenläufigen Rotoren, der aber über kurze Luftspriinge nicht hinaus kam. Der Erste Weltkrieg unterbrach eine weitere Entwick­lung. 1927 hatte Anton Flettner, der sich durch verschiedene Erfindungen auf dem Ge­biet der Strömungstechnik einen Namen ge­macht hatte, begonnen, sich mit dem Gedan­ken des Hubschraubers zu befassen. Es ent­stand eine Konstruktion mit einem großen Rotor, an dessen Blattenden 20 PS-Motore, die über kleine Luftschrauben den großen Rotor in Umdrehungen versetzten, montiert waren. Die Maschine erhob sich tatsächlich vom Boden, wurde dann aber durch eine plötzliche Windbö restlos zerstört. Flettner brach seine Versuche ab, gab aber die Idee nicht auf. 1928 führte Zaschka auf dem Flug­hafen Berlin-Tempelhof Versuche mit einem zweirotorigen Hubschrauber durch, die aber nicht zum Erfolg führten.
